What is an M.A.T.?

An MAT, or Master of Arts in Teaching, is a graduate-level degree program designed to prepare and enhance individuals’ careers as educators  and leaders. It focuses on practical teaching skills, pedagogical methods, and often includes a specialization in a particular subject area or grade level. Unlike a Master of Education (M.Ed.), which typically focuses on broader educational leadership, the MAT is geared towards those who want to be actively engaged in educator roles  while enhancing their knowledge and skills for leadership roles.

Program Overview

Become the leader you have always wanted to be and earn a master’s degree in the process. UNC Charlotte’s Master of Arts in Teaching programs allow students to become a self-reflective master teacher, in addition to developing advanced competencies as a teacher-researcher and a teacher-leader.

UNC Charlotte’s Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program is only for those who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Child and Family Development: Birth through Kindergarten. This two-phase program consists of 35 credit hours total: 21 credit hours in the graduate certificate phase (Phase I) and 14 hours in the master’s degree completion phase (Phase II).

All courses for both phases of the M.A.T. must be completed within seven years. Coursework within Phase I/Graduate Certificate must be completed within five years.
