What is an M.A.T.?

The M.A.T. program is specifically designed to complement the Graduate Certificate in Teaching (Phase I), which culminates in student teaching. Only students who complete Phase I at UNC Charlotte are eligible for the M.A.T. Individuals can apply during the student teaching semester to start in the following semester.

Program Overview

  • Become the teacher you have always wanted to be and earn a master’s degree in the process. UNC Charlotte’s Master of Arts in Teaching programs allow students to become a self-reflective master teacher, in addition to developing advanced competencies as a teacher-researcher and a teacher-leader.

UNC Charlotte’s Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program is only for those who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Child and Family Development: Birth through Kindergarten. This two-phase program consists of 35 credit hours total: 21 credit hours in the graduate certificate phase (Phase I) and 14 hours in the master’s degree completion phase (Phase II).

The M.A.T. (Phase II) allows qualified candidates to earn their master’s degree and the North Carolina Standard Professional 2 (SP2) Professional Educator’s License.
