Funding and Scholarships

The Turner School of Accountancy and the Belk College of Business offer a limited number of scholarships, assistantships and other funding opportunities to qualified students.

Priority funding timeline

To receive the strongest consideration for program-based funding:

  • Apply and be admitted to the MACC program by the end of February.
  • After admission, submit a scholarship application through the NinerScholars portal.

Students admitted after February may still apply for scholarships, though funding availability becomes more limited.

Assistantships and merit awards

  • Applicants who apply before the priority deadline are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships.
  • Students interested in graduate assistantships should indicate their interest in the application and apply before the priority deadline.
  • Because funding is highly competitive, awards after the March 1 priority deadline may still be available, but at a reduced rate.

Additional funding resources

You can also explore:

  • On-campus assistantships and employment opportunities through Hire-A-Niner
  • Graduate funding information maintained by The Graduate School
  • Financial aid and student loan guidance available on Niner Central

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the MACC differ from the MBA?

The MACC is a specialized degree focused on accounting, auditing and taxation — built specifically for students pursuing CPA licensure and careers in public or corporate accounting. The MBA is a broader general management degree.

Does the MACC degree fulfill the 150-hour CPA requirement?

Yes. Completion of the Professional Accounting or Financial Accounting/Auditing concentration, combined with an undergraduate accounting degree, enables students to meet the 150 credit-hour educational requirement for CPA licensure in North Carolina and most other states. Students should verify their home state’s specific requirements, as licensure rules vary.

Do I need an undergraduate accounting degree to apply?

Yes. The MACC is designed for students who hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited institution. Applicants without an accounting degree but with substantial accounting coursework may be asked to complete prerequisite work before beginning graduate study. Contact Kaylie Etheridge to discuss your background.

Is work experience required to apply?

No. The MACC is primarily designed for students entering directly from an undergraduate accounting program, and prior professional experience is not required. That said, relevant internship or accounting experience is viewed favorably and should be included in your résumé and statement of purpose.

Are scholarships available?

Yes. The Turner School of Accountancy and the Belk College of Business both offer funding to qualified students. For the best chance at Turner School scholarships, you should be admitted by the end of February and then apply through the NinerScholars Portal. Belk College merit scholarships are automatically considered for applicants who apply by the March 1 priority deadline. Apply early — funding becomes more limited as the term approaches.
