Choose to pursue your Master of Education degree full time or part time. There are no special prerequisites, and no teaching certificate is required to enter our program.

Learn from faculty experts. Courses are taught by faculty from the Cato College of Education, which includes Dr. Chance Lewis, who has provided consultative services focused on school turnaround to over 100 school districts, universities, educational entities and other organizations across the United States and Canada. Our faculty members bring their expertise and insights into the online classroom to ensure you receive a highly relevant and up-to-date education.
Earn your degree in just two years (five semesters). By pursuing your Master of Education degree studies full time, you will average two courses per semester and complete the program in two years (including one full summer term).
Earn more than one degree. As a part of your coursework, you’ll be completing four courses that count toward our Graduate Certificate in Self, Systems and Social Transformations. With one additional application, you can officially earn both a master’s degree and graduate certificate at the same time.
Experience our M.Ed. program online individually, but also as a team. Our Master of Education program is designed as a cohort model that admits students as a group, beginning each fall semester. You will be able to discuss classes and assignments with a group of students you’ll come to know and respect.

Dr. Bettie Ray Butler is a Professor in the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education at UNC Charlotte. She directs the M.Ed. in Urban Education graduate program. She is also the Associate Editor for the Journal of African American Women and Girls in Education (JAAWGE), an interdisciplinary research journal devoted to advancing scholarship and praxis related to Black women and girls in education.
Dr. Butler’s scholarly work is recognized nationally and internationally. Her research broadly explores the integration of restorative approaches (spiritual/faith-based lens) in an educational context. Through this work, Dr. Butler uses a restorative philosophy to inform practices that improve school/institutional climate, reduce educational disparities, and positively impact academic and socioemotional outcomes. As a result of her active research agenda, she has facilitated numerous professional development workshops, led several national webinars, presented at international and national conferences, and published 70+ peer-reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters, toolkits, and policy/technical reports. Her publications have appeared in nationally recognized publishing outlets such as Teachers College Press, Routledge, Peter Lang Publishers, and Rowman & Littlefield (Lexington Books); and her research is featured in academic journals, such as, Urban Education, Urban Review, Theory into Practice, Multicultural Perspectives, Women and Education, Journal of Education, Teachers College Record, and The Journal for Multicultural Education (recipient of the 2019 Emerald Literati Award for Outstanding Paper/Article). She is the lead author of the book Mentoring While White (2022) and co-author of the book Unsilencing Youth Trauma (2022). Dr. Butler has received institutional and local acknowledgement for her extraordinary impact of mentorship (2019 award nominee, Mayor’s Office), sustained service to public schools (2020 award recipient, Cato College of Education), and unwavering commitment to innovation in education (2022 award recipient, Cato College of Education) and leadership (2019 award recipient, Business Today). In 2023, Dr. Butler was honored with the Cato College of Education Distinguished Faculty award for her professional and research contributions to the field of education.
