Teaching English as a Second Language, Minor
Program Overview
The Cato College of Education’s Minor in Teaching English as a Second Language program is designed for teacher candidates who wish to gain expertise in the education of multilingual learners in the K-12 public school setting.
Districts are in dire need of teachers who can work with multilingual learners, and the strategies TESL teachers use to make learning accessible to those learners inherently make them stronger teachers, like scaffolding supports into lesson plans, cultural competency and nuance, and academic language development. Whether you plan to be primarily a teacher of MLs or a general classroom teacher, these skills make you a stronger candidate in the eyes of future principals and district employers.
The minor in TESL is only five courses, including one that enhances your student teaching experience. Successful completion of the minor will lead to a recommendation for North Carolina add-on K-12 licensure in ESL.

Program Details
Admission Requirements
- 30 earned credit hours
- Required GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Major or minor in a subject area for which there is teacher licensure (Elementary Education, Special Education, Secondary or Middle Grades Education, etc.)
- Grades of C or above in either: MDSK 2100 or EDUC 1100/EDUC 1511 and SPED 2100
- Signed Statement of Commitment to Professional Dispositions
- Passing a criminal background check (completed at time of application in TEAL)
- Recommendation of major advisor
