Are you a teacher looking to expand your knowledge and skills in reading education? Do you need a flexible, online program to obtain your M.Ed.?

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Reading Education program is designed for experienced, licensed, practicing elementary, middle and high school teachers. Our flexible online master’s program allows you to obtain your M level/advanced license for teaching in the state of North Carolina.

Our online master’s program will help deepen your understanding of evidence-based reading and writing practices and gain the skills to transform student learning. You will prepare to earn your advanced K–12 reading license as you master assessment, curriculum design and diverse instructional approaches to empower all learners.

Courses

The M.Ed. in Reading Education is offered fully online. Courses are delivered in the Canvas learning management system with some instructors also using video meetings through platforms like Zoom. The program is designed as a cohort model.  Students can complete the degree within two years/five semesters.

Early Entry: Learn more about our Early Entry option through the Minor in Reading Education that can be completed during a Bachelor’s program. Students can earn up to 12 credit-hours towards the M.Ed. in Reading as undergraduates, about a third of the overall M.Ed. requirements.

Our M.Ed. in Reading Education program meets the International Literacy Association (ILA) standards.

Learn from faculty experts. Courses are taught by faculty from the Cato College of Education, which includes Dr. Bruce Taylor, whose research and teaching focus on literacy instruction and support in and out of classrooms, including the social and cultural aspects of literacy, the role of diverse texts and technologies in content-area classrooms and community-based support for literacy.

Earn your online master’s degree in just two years (five semesters). You will average two courses per semester and complete the program in two years (including one full summer term).

Exceptional undergraduate students in UNC Charlotte’s Reading Education program may apply to the Early Entry Program to begin work toward a Reading Education, M.Ed. graduate degree before completion of the bachelor’s degree.
