Middle Grades Education, B.A.

Program Overview

UNC Charlotte’s B.A. in Middle Grades Education program will license you to educate young adolescents from grades 6 to 9 and enable you to have a significant impact on their lives. In the process of earning this degree, you will learn how to: plan engaging and rigorous curriculum; respond to the unique developmental needs of young adolescents; make instructional decisions based on the science of learning; work with learners who have varied proficiencies and interests; assess students’ academic progress; integrate technology into lessons; and evaluate your own teaching efficacy.

Middle school teachers play an important role in the development of students during formative years. Our interdisciplinary program will teach you classroom management strategies, methods of engaging and motivating students, effective strategies for supporting multilingual learners, and many other approaches to meeting different learning needs.

Course requirements vary with a student’s academic concentration. In some concentrations, courses may count for both general education and the requirements of the concentration. Students should plan on taking specific courses that meet general education requirements and also satisfy courses in the major.

Why teach middle school?

Many teachers find middle schoolers to be the most rewarding age group to teach. Here are a few reasons why middle school teachers love what they do:

  • Middle school students change week by week, day by day, and hour by hour. As a middle school teacher, you’ll never experience the same day twice.
  • Because human creativity peaks in early adolescence, middle schoolers will keep you on your toes with their spontaneous humor and unexpected insights.
  • Young adolescents are developing the identities they’ll carry into their adult lives, and they’ll look to you to see what it means to be an adult. This means middle school teachers can have an outsized influence on who young people turn out to be.
