Program Overview

The B.A. degree in Math with a Statistics concentration is a flexible program that provides a foundation in mathematics and training for graduates to succeed in careers that demand statistical skills. Students in this concentration are encouraged to complement coursework with a minor or second major to reflect the student’s personal career interests.

Mathematics, Statistics Concentration, B.A. at a Glance

A Mathematics degree requires 120 credit hours. Math majors in the Statistics concentration take 12 credit hours of calculus, linear algebra, an introductory computer programming course, probability and statistics, applied regression, and upper-level electives such as design of experiments, time series analysis, multivariate analysis, applied statistics, and statistical computing, among others.

Mathematics is a language, a science, an art form, and a tool of tremendous power. Today every educated person needs at least a familiarity with the language of mathematics to understand the growth of technology in almost every aspect of our society. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics seeks to introduce students to this vast area of knowledge and assist its students to develop

  • Understanding of concepts, structure, and style of mathematics;
  • The ability to reason deductively and inductively; and
  • Facility with the applications of mathematics.
