Program Overview

The B.S. degree in Mathematics for Business is designed to provide a strong mathematics and statistics foundation and a well-rounded education in the quantitative aspects of finance, modeling, and analytics. Graduates of the Mathematics for Business program are valuable assets to the business community.  They bring expertise in Mathematics, Statistics, and Operation Research, along with excellent analytic skills to businesses, financial institutions, insurance firms, and government agencies.

Mathematics for Business, B.S. at a Glance

A Mathematics for Business degree requires 120 credit hours. Majors in the B.S. study calculus, statistics, theory of interest, linear algebra, applied regression, introductory operations research, computer exploration and generation of data. Additionally, students must take a focused concentration in either Economics & Finance or Actuarial Science to complement their core math and stats skills.

The Unifying Language of Mathematics

Mathematics is a language, a science, an art form, and a tool of tremendous power. Today every educated person needs at least a familiarity with the language of mathematics to understand the growth of technology in almost every aspect of our society. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics seeks to introduce students to this vast area of knowledge and assist its students to develop:

  • Understanding of concepts, structure, and style of mathematics;
  • The ability to reason deductively and inductively; and
  • Facility with the applications of mathematics.
