Program Overview

The B.A. degree in Mathematics is a program that offers a selection of courses from pure to applied mathematics and statistics. It provides flexibility to study select coursework in mathematics and statistics aligned with the student’s interests, and to couple the program with a minor or even a second major. Graduates in this degree are set to succeed in a range of careers in research, education, computer and data science, financial analysis, statistical analysis, etc. Students are encouraged to pursue research and internship opportunities. Students have the option to declare a concentration in Actuarial Science or Statistics. Students who would like to add a Teacher Licensure can also add a minor in Secondary Education by the second year.

Mathematics, B.A. at a Glance

A Mathematics degree requires 120 credit hours. Mathematics majors study relationships and patterns between numbers, structures, and processes. All our math majors take 12 credit hours of calculus, linear algebra, an introductory computer programming course, differential equations, and at least a course that involves students in reasoning and proofs. Upper-level electives allow students to explore a variety of topics such as graph theory, combinatorics, topology, and statistics.

Mathematics is a language, a science, an art form, and a tool of tremendous power. Today every educated person needs at least a familiarity with the language of mathematics to understand the growth of technology in almost every aspect of our society. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics seeks to introduce students to this vast area of knowledge and assist its students to develop

  • Understanding of concepts, structure, and style of mathematics;
  • The ability to reason deductively and inductively; and
  • Facility with the applications of mathematics.
