Program Overview

Japanese is a powerful, challenging, and exciting language that lets you access a world of business, technology, art, pop culture, and history. We are one of only three universities in North Carolina to offer four full years of Japanese language courses. We make it easy to study abroad for a year and still graduate within four years. There are over a hundred students who are majoring in Japanese at UNC Charlotte. It is a dynamic degree to help carry you on your way to future academic and financial success! After graduation, various opportunities await you in academics, business, and more. Whether you are starting your career in Japan, in the US, or in another country, having a degree in Japanese gives you a huge advantage.

Languages and Culture Studies, Honors Program

Japanese Studies, B.A. at a Glance

The Major in Japanese Studies consists of 34 credit hours. For the Major you need to complete 15 hours of Required Core Major Courses, which include intermediate and advanced language. In addition, students take 9 credit hours of elective courses up to the 3000-level and 9 credit hours of elective courses at the 4000-level courses. A 1 credit hour Senior Seminar completes the Major. You will complete the degree with an oral exam which is administered by a staff member and based on the proficiency standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL). Reading, writing, and listening competencies, as well as Japanese grammatical knowledge also will be assessed by an internally created test based on the internationally accredited Japanese Proficiency Language Test (JLPT). The results will not impact graduation. Scholarships for Merit and Study Abroad are available.
