Applications received after the Priority Application Submission Date will be reviewed on a space-available basis. Applicants may submit their application earlier than the deadline for consideration for admission.

In addition to the online application, the following are required for acceptance:

• A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
• Unofficial transcripts of all academic work attempted beyond high (secondary) school can be used for admission review. An official (officially certified) final transcript must be submitted if an applicant is offered admission.
• Three letters of recommendation (Academic and/or Professional)
• Statement of purpose describing the applicant’s experience and objectives in undertaking graduate study in Health Informatics and Analytics

International Applicants

• Official GRE test scores are required for international applicants. The GRE can be waived if the applicant holds a terminal degree (Ph.D., MD, or JD). or the applicant has earned a degree from an accredited institution in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
• Official scores from either the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo assessment are required for applicants whose first language is not English. The English language assessment can be waived if the applicant has earned a degree from an accredited institution in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Recommendations

For the Population Health Analytics Concentration:

• One semester of calculus and one semester of statistics
• Experience in one or more of the following: computer sciences, health sciences, information systems, life sciences, or in an informatics discipline.

For the AI and Data Science for Health Concentration:

• Two semesters of calculus and one semester of statistics
• Experience in one or more of the following: computer sciences, health sciences, information systems, life sciences, or in an informatics discipline.
• Working knowledge of at least one high-level programming language (e.g., Python, Java, R, or C/C++/C#)
• Familiarity with computer systems and applications.

SDS Graduate Assistantships 

Graduate Assistantships offer valuable mentorship and financial support, making them highly competitive. At the graduate level, these positions are typically categorized into two types: Teaching Assistantships (TAs) and Instructional Assistantships (IAs). The School of Data Science (SDS) funds between 30 and 35 assistantships each semester, available exclusively to students enrolled in SDS academic programs. Financial Aid

The Office of Student Financial Aid administers several federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs to graduate students at UNC Charlotte who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  

The FAFSA helps U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens gain access to gift aid (repayment not required) such as grants, or self-help aid (direct repayment or service required), like loans and Federal Work-Study awards. Estimated Tuition & Fees: 2026-2027 

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors establishes the tuition and fee structure for the program during the spring of the prior academic year. The cost of attendance varies each semester and is contingent on a student’s enrollment (full or part-time), residency status, and associated university and program fees. The matrix below is an estimated cost for the DSHA graduate programs and assumes that students are enrolled in the traditional campus program. The estimate includes the DSHA Tuition Increment.
