Geography, Comprehensive Social Studies Teacher Licensure, B.A.

Program Overview

Are you curious about how the decisions we make about land and resources affect the natural environment? Or how the distribution of natural resources drives human activities, and want to teach social studies to high school students? If so, the Geography, Comprehensive Social Studies Teacher Licensure, B.A. degree is for you.

Geographers study how humans interact with the environment, often using digital technologies, and solve problems in order to build a more sustainable world.

Geography explores the relationship between human and biophysical systems and deals with some of the most critical issues of our time such as environmental hazards, climate change, sustainability of resource management systems, international development, and community and urban planning. Understanding the concept of place, including how and why places differ from each other, is a central concern.

A Major in Geography leading to a B.A. degree consists of 54 credit hours in Geography and Earth Sciences coursework. Students in the B.A. program will focus study in two primary areas: Urban Studies and Planning and Geography. Students seeking teacher licensure in Comprehensive Social Studies must complete the requirements for the B.A. in Geography including 17 credit hours in required coursework and 19 elective credit hours. Students must have a Minor in Secondary Education to obtain teaching licensure. Licensure applications are the responsibility of the student and the Office of Teacher Education Advising and Licensure (TEAL) in the Cato College of Education.
