Program Overview
Are you a passionate educator ready to take your foreign language teaching career to the next level? UNC Charlotte’s Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Foreign Language Education program is designed specifically for individuals who have already completed the Graduate Certificate in Teaching Foreign Language Education (K-12) at UNC Charlotte.
Our unique two-phase program
Phase I: Earn your Graduate Certificate in Teaching Foreign Language Education (K-12) and gain practical classroom experience through a student teaching internship.
Phase II: Deepen your knowledge and skills with advanced master’s-level coursework in teacher leadership, research, and innovative methodologies.
The M.A.T. program is specifically designed to complement the Graduate Certificate in Teaching (Phase I), which culminates in student teaching. Only students who complete Phase I at UNC Charlotte are eligible for the M.A.T. Individuals can apply during the student teaching semester to start in the following semester.

Courses
The four additional courses to earn the MAT in Foreign Language Education cover the following topics:
Lesson plan design
Global education
Foreign language teaching methods and assessment
Teacher leadership
Advanced methodology
Research skills
All coursework to complete the M.A.T. must be completed in a six-year time frame, beginning with the first course taken in the Graduate Certificate Program.

Completion of UNC Charlotte’s Graduate Certificate in Teaching Foreign Language Education (K-12).
A minimum graduate GPA of 3.5 in the Graduate Certificate in Teaching Foreign Language Education (K-12).
Students with a GPA below 3.5 in the Graduate Certificate phase may be considered for admission to the M.A.T. program with scores above the 30th percentile on the GRE Test.
Copies of unofficial transcripts from all academic coursework beyond high school.
One recommendation from a full-time faculty member who has taught you in the Graduate Certificate in Teaching in Foreign Language Education. Applicants will provide reference contact names and email addresses through the application portal.
