Foreign Language Education (K-12), Minor

Program Overview

The Cato College of Education at UNC Charlotte offers a Foreign Language Education (K-12) minor for students to address the shortage of qualified foreign language teachers in the United States. Our foreign language education (FLED) minor prepares current and aspiring K-12 teachers to be effective, dynamic practitioners in the following languages: French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

Students wishing to minor in K-12 Foreign Language Education must be approved for admission to the minor by meeting statewide teacher education program admission requirements. Advising and admission to the minor are administered through the Office of Teacher Education Advising and Licensure (TEAL) in the College of Education.

The successful completion of this degree program includes meeting the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s licensure requirements for certification. Consequently, additional requirements must be completed during the student’s program. Since state licensure requirements often change, additional work may be required to complete the program with a teaching license.
