Fire Science, Minor

Program Overview

The Fire Science minor provides you with a foundational understanding of fire, encompassing both its benefits and drawbacks. The curriculum offers comprehensive coursework in fire behavior, investigation and hazardous materials. Emphasizing the technical aspects of fire, the minor equips you for increasingly responsible positions in workplace safety and management.

The minor is relevant to a wide array of disciplines, including:

  • Engineering: understanding the science of fire and its interaction with structures and systems, crucial for analyzing fire’s impact.
  • Architecture: informing the design of fire-resistant structures, as exemplified by events like the local SouthPark fire.
  • Criminal Justice: providing a scientific foundation for law enforcement personnel on Arson Task Forces.
  • Nursing: enhancing understanding of the physiological effects of fire and varying temperatures on the body. 
  • Psychology: offering insights into the motivations behind fire abuse and connecting to public health concerns regarding occupational fire safety.
