Fire and Safety Engineering Technology, Fire Safety Concentration, B.S.E.T.

Program Overview

Fire and safety engineering skills are essential in a variety of industries due to their diverse and deep knowledge that supports public safety. The B.S. in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology provides you such foundational knowledge as building occupancies and safety, hazardous material, incident management from the emergency response, and the industry perspective and more. In the program, you advance to higher level skills like how to identify factors and materials that can create specific hazards, assess threats from natural disasters, and relate historical events to today’s environment.

Experiential learning opportunities in the program include internships in the sprinkler and alarm industry, local fire departments, law enforcement and others. Students are also required to participate in a senior year capstone project where they research, design and build solutions to real-world challenges. Past projects include “Construction of a Fire Resistive home without Sprinklers,” “Use of Lightning Detection and Drones as a First Response to Wildfires” and “Gas Detection and Shutoff System for Homes.”

As a graduate from this program, you are equipped to pursue careers in fire investigation, national laboratories, safety supervision and more.
