Criminal Justice, Minor

Program Overview

The Criminal Justice minor is an abbreviated version of the Criminal Justice major with two interrelated areas of study. Criminology is the study of the etiology and nature of crime and delinquency, and theoretical explanations conceived to explain these behaviors. Criminal Justice is the study of agencies’ responses to criminal and delinquent behavior, the relationship among these agencies, and policies that impact the process through which justice is administered.

Declaring Minor

Declarations for new minors: Students can begin submitting declaration applications as soon as grades are posted on transcripts. Check your transcript regularly to see when the minor appears. Students will not receive any type of notifications; therefore it is the student’s responsibility to monitor their status!

Requirements to Declare:

To become a CJ Minor, you must have a 2.0 GPA [note: a 2.0 overall GPA and at least a 2.0 GPA in CJUS courses only are both required] and have a declared Major (cannot be Criminal Justice) and have completed CJUS 1100/1511 with a grade of C or better.

If you meet the 2 requirements above, you can send an email to cjusadvisor@charlotte.edu from your UNC Charlotte EMAIL ONLY to request admission to the minor. In this email, you must include your full name, student ID number, and the following statement: “I would like to add Criminal Justice as a minor.” The subject line must read: CJUS MINOR DECLARATION. If you do not use this subject line, your request may be missed.

* If you want us to drop your current minor, include that statement as well. (For example, “I would like to add Criminal Justice as a minor and drop my current minor of ________.”) Do not include this statement if you intend to double minor.
