Program Overview

The concentration in Crime Analytics gives you the skills to conduct research using cutting-edge technologies and revolutionizing how we study crime and criminal behaviors. Through the Crime Analytics curriculum, you will develop a portfolio of skills that can be shown to employers at police departments, research firms, governmental and non-governmental agencies, setting yourself apart from your peers. You don’t have to be an expert in math or statistics, but you should be curious, eager, and willing to learn new technologies. You’ll learn industry-leading software like R and RStudio, SAS, Stata, Tableau, and GIS, and prepare yourself for exciting career opportunities in crime analysis, data analysis, and quantitative research.

Criminal Justice, Crime Analytics Concentration, B.A. at a Glance

To complete the Crime Analytics Concentration, students must successfully complete four (4) of the Crime Analytics Courses in addition to 16 hours of required courses: CJUS 1511, 2340, 2370, and 1200 – as well as Statistics 1222 or 1221 or 1220 – plus one Engagement Across Perspectives course, and 12 hours of CJUS electives.

Program Overview

The graduate certificate in Crime Analysis provides students with practical skills and theoretical insight into understanding crime patterns. It also exposes students to the ethical issues surrounding data management and analysis and includes courses aimed at providing students with a marketable skill set.

You must apply to obtain the certificate, which is awarded upon successful completion of 12 credit hours earned in courses.  Students may apply credit hours earned in this certificate program toward the M.S. in Criminal Justice program.  Requests for related classes and substitutions may be approved at the discretion of the Graduate Program Director.  Up to 6 hours of post-baccalaureate status may be applied to the certificate with the approval of the Graduate Program Director.  All coursework applied to a certificate must be completed within 5 years.

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by an accepted accrediting body

Application to the Graduate Admissions portal accompanied by the application fee in effect

A GPA of at least 2.75

Important Note: Graduate classes can “double-count” for both a certificate and a Master’s degree.  However, if you choose to pursue more than one graduate certificate, these classes cannot “triple” count.   If you have already taken master’s courses that you would like to count for your certificate, you will need to submit an academic petition to have it double-count (program requirement petition).
