Expert Faculty

The Department of Counseling at UNC Charlotte features a diverse faculty from different backgrounds and with varied research interests. The faculty is diverse in language, race, gender, sexual orientation, experience, specialty areas, and research approaches. Faculty members’ expertise spans school counseling, clinical mental health counseling, play therapy, addictions counseling, and couples and family counseling. All faculty members have counseling experience in school, community, or agency settings.

Community Partnerships

Community partnerships are written in the DNA of both Cato College of Education and the Counseling department. Our college holds over 350 official partnerships with schools and community organizations in the greater Southwest region.

In Counseling, this means a broad variety of sites are available for doctoral students to complete their practica, internships, and dissertation studies.

We also annually host the McLeod Institute, a week of professional development activities surrounding substance abuse counseling. Cato College is also home to the annual Multicultural Play Therapy Conference, one of the only national opportunities of its kind for professional development for play therapy professionals.

Multifaceted Program

As a Charlotte student, you’ll have the opportunity to supervise Masters-level students and teach coursework in three different concentrations – school counseling, addictions counseling, and clinical mental health – making sure your counselor supervision education is well-rounded.

Our program also has a strong emphasis on multiculturalism and justice in coursework, research, and department philosophy. You’ll develop what that means for you and your counseling practice by choosing from a wide range of electives, clinical experiences, research opportunities, and mentors.

FAQ

Who is this degree for? Do I need a Masters in Counseling?

Our degree is designed primarily for counselors who want to develop more in-depth clinical skills, supervision skills, teaching skills, and/or administrative skills.

We do require a Masters in Counseling from a CACREP-accredited institution or equivalent coursework to be considered for admission. A transcript audit is part of the admission process to show if the following has been addressed: Counseling Theory, Counseling Techniques, Human Growth and Development, Professional Ethics, Multicultural Counseling, Career and Lifestyle Development, Testing and Assessment, Research, Practicum, and Internship.

How much time do I have to complete this degree?

The Ph.D. is designed as a full-time program. Courses are offered only once each year as part of a sequence. It is important to be making steady progress towards the degree. Classes are offered during the day and many of them require assistance in a related Master’s level course. We can work with students on a case-by-case basis, but the maximum time to complete the degree is nine years.

Is funding assistance available?

Potentially, yes. Please visit the Graduate School to learn more about GASP and other funding opportunities.

This is a tremendous program that I am extremely proud to have graduated from. I urge prospective counseling students to check out the phenomenal program at UNC Charlotte.

I felt very welcomed by the faculty. They made me feel comfortable, and I felt like a colleague rather than just a student. I think the faculty is the greatest strength of the program.

I appreciated the trust faculty put in doctoral students when working with Master’s students. I was given responsibilities along with guidance and support that made me feel more confident in my teaching and supervision skills.

I liked the infusion of multicultural counseling and discussion into all of the courses and situations. It was the facet I was most looking forward to when coming to the program, and they followed through in their focus.
