Anthropology, B.A.

Program Overview

UNC Charlotte’s Anthropology Department offers students a comprehensive approach to understanding human biological and cultural commonalities and differences across time and space. As a field science that studies people wherever and whenever they live, Anthropology helps us understand where people came from, how we differ from one another, and what those differences mean. Knowing how groups of people around the world have solved common problems over the hundreds of thousands of years of human history provides insight into contemporary challenges such as poverty, environmental degradation, and violent conflict. It also inspires us to appreciate human creativity, art, and science.

Students majoring in such diverse fields as Art History, Biology, Psychology, and Computer Science often minor or double major in Anthropology for its comprehensive global and historical perspective on the world. Anthropological theories and methods apply to non-academic settings like non-profit organizations, hospitals, businesses, and government. Students can focus on general or applied anthropology concentrations in the B.A. program.

Several of UNC Charlotte’s faculty work on research projects in both archaeology and sociocultural anthropology in the Charlotte region. Students within the department are encouraged to work with faculty on community-based projects, service-learning experiences, and field schools. Applied Anthropology majors participate in internships with local organizations such as the local area food bank.
