Turning Data Science Professionals into AI Innovators

The AI for Data Science Practitioners Graduate Certificate prepares students to apply modern artificial intelligence techniques across the full data science lifecycle, from data engineering and model development to deployment, governance and communication of results. Designed as an applied, practitioner-focused program, the curriculum integrates machine learning, deep learning, large language models (LLMs), agentic AI systems and MLOps with hands-on experience solving real-world problems. Students develop the technical and strategic skills needed to build, deploy, evaluate and manage AI-enabled solutions while addressing critical issues in ethics, privacy, security and responsible AI. The program is ideal for working professionals and recent graduates seeking advanced AI expertise in data science, analytics, computing, engineering and related technical fields. Courses are offered in the evening on the Uptown Campus to support working professionals and flexible graduate study.

What You Will Learn

Students will develop practical skills in building AI-ready data pipelines, developing machine learning and deep learning models, applying large language models (LLMs) and generative AI techniques, and designing agentic AI systems. The program also emphasizes deploying and managing models using MLOps practices, evaluating model risk and reliability and communicating insights through visualization and data storytelling. Graduates will be prepared to apply AI and machine learning methods to solve real-world data science and analytics challenges.

Curriculum: 15 Credit Hours

Students complete four core courses focused on the foundations and applications of AI in data science:

  • Data Engineering for AI
  • Introduction to AI and Machine Learning
  • Applications of LLMs
  • Agentic AI

Students select one elective course based on their interests and career goals. Elective options include:

  • Visual Analytics and Storytelling
  • Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Ethics
  • Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning
  • AI and Model Risk Management
  • AI Applications in Business
  • AI in Marketing

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I complete this while working full-time?

Yes. The program is designed for part-time students, with courses offered in the evenings at the Dubois Center on the Uptown campus.

Do I need a CS or technical background?

 Yes. This is an advanced certificate. Applicants are expected to have prior academic or professional experience in data science, computer science, or a related quantitative field, including some programming experience.

Can courses transfer to a master’s program?

Yes. Up to 15 credit hours (5 courses) may be applied toward the MS in Data Science and Business Analytics or the MS in Data Science and Health Analytics, with program approval.

What programming languages are used?

Python and SQL.

Is this online or in person?

This program is delivered 100% in person.
